He earned his MD from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil, followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at Hilton Rocha Eye Institute, and a PhD from the University of Bristol, UK. He is a Fellow of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. Prof. Figueiredo has held prominent positions including Consultant Ophthalmologist at Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, Honorary Associate Fellow, and Professor at Newcastle University. His clinical expertise encompasses cornea and external eye diseases, cataract, glaucoma, refractive surgery, and ocular imaging, with significant contributions to the development of anterior segment surgical techniques and ocular ultrasound. He has conducted pioneering research in corneal transplantation, graft rejection immunology, and management of post-keratoplasty astigmatism, authoring numerous publications in high-impact journals. His work combines innovative clinical practice with translational research, emphasizing patient-centered care and advanced surgical outcomes.
