Author Profile

Early Academic Pursuits

Dr. Giuseppe Bagnato began his academic journey by earning a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom, in April 2020. His doctoral research focused on the catalytic conversion of biomass to fuels and commodity chemicals, specifically exploring the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived fast pyrolysis oil.

Professional Endeavors

Following his Ph.D., Dr. Bagnato pursued various research and teaching roles at prestigious institutions. He worked as a Research Associate in the seafood bio-refinery project at Heriot-Watt University, conducting technical and economic assessments of a biorefinery approach to valorizing by-products from the Thai seafood processing industry.

He further extended his expertise during an Erasmus+ traineeship at the University of Groningen, where he contributed to developing a fundamental understanding of the chemistry involved in the low-temperature hydrogenation of pyrolytic lignin.

Dr. Bagnato also served as a Research Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast, engaging in multi-topic projects related to reactive extractions, gas and liquid separations, synthesis of ionic liquids/covalent organic frameworks, and synthesis/formulations of soft materials. These projects were in collaboration with Petronas oil company.

As a Visiting Scholar at Ca’ Foscari Venice University, he studied the hydrodeoxygenation reaction of bio-oil in the presence of mono- and bi-metallic catalysts. Additionally, he worked as a Visiting Scholar at Heriot-Watt University, contributing to the development of novel materials for carbon dioxide utilization.

His commitment to academic excellence is evident in his engagement as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Lancaster University, where he combines teaching, research, knowledge exchange, enterprise, and business engagement, specifically focusing on net-zero carbon themes.

Contributions and Research Focus

Dr. Bagnato's research spans a diverse range of topics, including catalytic conversion of biomass, hydrogen production, bio-refinery processes, and sustainable energy technologies. He has received research funding, including the Dr. Philip Welch's 2023 STEM research funding at Lancaster University and Researcher Development Grants from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

His notable research contributions include work on chemical recycling of plastics, the Tees Valley Hydrogen Innovation Project, and the stabilization of aqueous phase fractions of bio-oil using innovative catalysts.

Accolades and Recognition

Dr. Bagnato has garnered recognition for his work, with an H-index of 11 on both Scopus and Google Scholar. He received the Royal Society of Chemistry Catalysis Science & Technology poster prize at FineCat 2017 in Palermo, Italy.

Impact and Influence

His influence extends beyond research, as he actively contributes to the academic community through roles such as a Teaching Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast and a Teaching Assistant at Heriot Watt University. He has led modules, supervised internships, and been involved in the development of students' academic and practical skills.

Legacy and Future Contributions

Dr. Giuseppe Bagnato's legacy is marked by a rich tapestry of academic achievements, impactful research, and dedicated teaching. His multidisciplinary approach to addressing challenges in the fields of chemical engineering and sustainable technologies positions him as a valuable contributor to the ongoing global efforts toward a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
