Professor Jan-Harm de Villier, South Africa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Jurisprudence at the University of South Africa, specialising in legal philosophy, animal law, and critical jurisprudence. He holds a PhD in Law and Philosophy from Leiden University, along with LLM, LLB, and BCom (Law) degrees (all cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, and his scholarship critically examines anthropocentrism, animal rights theory, ethics, and the role of law in human–animal relations. Professor de Villiers has published extensively in leading accredited journals and edited volumes, serves on international editorial and advisory boards, and is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences. He is an NRF Y2-rated researcher and recipient of multiple prestigious research awards and scholarships, including the Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Research at UNISA. With over a decade of teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he has supervised doctoral research to completion and contributes actively to university committees, ethics initiatives, and external examining and peer-review activities.
