Dr Venkatesh Babu Gopal - Molecular Biology and Fungal Genetics- Best Researcher Award

University of Agricultural Sciences - india

Author Profile

Early Academic Pursuits

Dr. G. Venkatesh Babu's academic journey began with a Master's degree in Biotechnology from Loyola College, Chennai. He later pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biotechnology-Botany, specializing in Molecular Plant Pathology, at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, Chennai, India. His research focused on the molecular underpinning of fungal DHN (dihydroxynaphthalene) melanin, specifically in the pathogen Curvularia lunata.

Professional Endeavors

After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Venkatesh Babu has been actively involved in the field of Molecular Phytopathology and Genetic Engineering. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the PathoGenOmics Lab in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore, India. He is working on a project funded by United Phosphorus Pvt. Ltd. (UPL).

Contributions and Research Focus

His doctoral research focused on unraveling the molecular aspects of fungal melanin biosynthesis, with a specific emphasis on the DHN-melanin biosynthetic pathway in Curvularia lunata. This research aimed to understand the role of melanin in fungal penetration into host plants, particularly in causing the black kernel disease in rice (Oryza sativa).

Accolades and Recognition

Dr. Venkatesh Babu has received several honors, awards, and fellowships throughout his academic and research career. Notably, he was awarded the Meritorious Basic Scientific Research fellowship (BSR) from the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India. He also served as a Project Research Fellow for a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Impact and Influence

His research has contributed significantly to the understanding of the genetic analysis of the melanin biosynthetic gene Cl3HNR in Curvularia lunata. The study explored the potential of using the Cl3HNR gene as a target for fungicides, particularly the Melanin Biosynthetic Inhibitor tricyclazole. The findings have implications for the development of commercial formulations for the management of phytopathogens in agriculture.
