Dr. Hu earned his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany, in September 2021, graduating with the distinction Magna Cum Laude. His doctoral work, supervised by Prof. Helmut Mischo, focused on high-pressure gas adsorption phenomena in shale formations and was recognized by the Society of Mining Professors, where he was shortlisted among the top three candidates for the prestigious Karmis PhD Fellowship in 2021. Prior to this, he completed his Master of Science in Mining Engineering from Chongqing University, China, in 2014, receiving both the National Scholarship for Postgraduates and the China Scholarship Council award. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from the same institution, completed in 2011. Dr. Hu’s academic training is firmly grounded in mining, rock mechanics, and geological fluid dynamics.

Experience

Dr. Hu currently serves as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta, where his responsibilities include designing and implementing high-temperature and high-pressure experimental setups, simulating thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes, and conducting 3D microstructural characterization of cement and geological materials using advanced imaging tools like micro-CT. He is actively engaged in multiple major research projects funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC), focusing on wellbore integrity and leakage mitigation in oil, gas, and CCUS wells. His methodological versatility also includes molecular simulations, pore-scale modeling, machine learning, and advanced experimental methods including FIB-SEM, XRD, mercury intrusion, and TGA.
